Can You Have More Than One Love Language?

Updated: Feb 17, 2021

Have you ever wondered how many love languages you can have? Can you have more than one love language? Dr. Chapman, in his books on the Five Love Languages says that we usually have one primary and one secondary language. From our experience, it seems that this holds:

We actually are able to express or enjoy EACH of the five love languages-- but with varying impact.

My ranking, for example, for my giving love language would be:

  1. Giving Gifts

  2. Quality Time

  3. Acts of Service

  4. Physical Touch

  5. Words of Affirmation

We have to learn to speak all five languages as much as we can since we encounter a lot of people who have different needs.

Of course we'd still have a "mother tongue", but it would help to learn how to speak each language even to a certain degree. It is, after all, not impossible to do. We can have multiple love languages / more than one love language after all! We have family members, friends, officemates, churchmates, our romantic partner, siblings, neighbors, etc. Just like how speaking various languages makes it easy for a traveller to interact with people from many places, learning how to speak the FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES will allow you to better relate with others as well.

And my ranking for my receiving love language would be:

  1. Quality Time

  2. Acts of Service

  3. Physical Touch

  4. Words of Affirmation

  5. Receiving Gifts

I have gifts as the lowest love language but that doesn't mean that I will take offense in receiving a gift. If it's done in love, it will still be appreciated -- although maybe not as much as other expressions of love. On the other hand, if my top love languages (QUALITY TIME / ACTS OF SERVICE) are not met, then I will still not be as "loved" no matter how many gifts you give.

So, can you have multiple love languages? Can you have more than one love language? Yes, you can. And it may be of benefit to you and your loved ones if you actually make an effort to improve on each language.
